Collaborative working spaces
Web-based working spaces or e-learning environments that are specifically designed to support communication, interaction and cooperation with certain themes or subjects. They can be open or restricted, or contain password areas.

Configuration
Specifying software settings (e.g. IP address), or referring to a computer system.

Desktop videoconferencing system
Personal computer with certain videoconference equipments (video camera, codec, microphone, loudspeakers) and software can make a videoconference with another similar system. The connection can be ISDN or IP. Suits personal or small group videoconferencing and is much less expensive to purchase than room videoconferencing system.

Gateway
Connecting vc-system using ISDN technology to another vc-system in IP network, and vice versa. Gateway makes these two incompatible systems work together.

Group (room) videoconferencing system
High quality videoconferencing equipments for large groups.

IP-Videoconference
Videoconferencing over Internet Protocol means using broadband Internet connections to

ISDN Videoconference (Teleconference)
Integrated Services Digital Network. An international standard for end-to-end digital transmission of voice, data, and signalling in telecommunication. In videoconference it is a system that provides simultaneous voice, video, and text transmission between individual desktop videoconferencing systems and group (room) videoconferencing systems.

IRC
Internet Relay Chat requires a piece of software to be installed on the participant's computer.

Messenger chat
Those who have the same software, e.g. MNS, can chat, transfer files, audio or video (web camera) over Internet.

MOOs and MUDs
Multiple User Dimension, types of visualized chat room/world where participants choose character and name to represent themselves.

Multipoint videoconference
Communication configuration in which several videoconference systems (desktop vc-systems and/or group vc-systems) are connected via video bridge. See also point-to-point communication. Often include MCU, Multipoint Control Unit that allows communication within more than two connections at the same time.

Point-to-point videoconference
Communication between two desktop vc-system or group vc-system.

Video bridge
Computerized switching system which enables multipoint videoconferencing.
